The formalities

The main step to pursue studies in Italy is to register with universities or institutions in the country. This must be done between the months of January and February preceding the start of the academic year.

Students from the euro zone must send their application directly to the institution they wish to join. In general, each establishment indicates on its site the steps to follow as well as the files to be constituted. In all cases, he must provide a photocopy of his diploma translated into Italian by a specialist or by the School Service of the Consulate General of Italy.

EU citizens do not need a visa to study in Italy, but must have a valid ID card.

The diplomas

At the end of the training, here are the diplomas awarded by Italian universities:

laurea di primo livello which is prepared in three years.
laurea magistrale (it corresponds to the Master) which is delivered two years after obtaining the first laurea.
The student can continue his studies if he wishes to obtain a laurea specialistica (specialized master) as well as the dottorato during which the training is focused on research.

Equivalences

Given that the country is one of the institutions that have adopted the LMD system, the diplomas are the same as in France: laurea corresponds to the license, the master's degree to the Master, and the second cycle to the master's degree. The Dottorato is the equivalent of the doctorate.
