Higher education in Turkey

Higher education in universities includes Bachelor, PhD, Master. In addition to a master's degree, a higher degree in engineering is also awarded which is equivalent to a master's degree. Both degrees require a thesis to be completed and defended. Universities are divided into two types, with 104 public universities and 62 private universities. Turkish universities are held in high esteem, with 5 schools in the top 400 worldwide, according to the 2012 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Universities in Turkey

Programs in state universities are usually taught in Turkish, although some programs are taught in English, German or French. Students who do not master Turkish entering the Turkish programs can take one year of language training before continuing their studies. Most international programs are taught in private universities, where the language of instruction is most often English. Private universities are also known as foundation universities.

Currently, about 30,000 international students are enrolled in education programs in the country, but Turkey aims to increase this number to 150,000. Although most academic disciplines are available, popular programs for international students are International Relations, Mediterranean Studies, Multicultural Business Studies, Engineering, Business Management and Hospitality.


Tuition and Duration of the program

Semester tuition at state universities where tuition is in Turkish is approximately $ 100 - $ 200 (US) for Turkish nationals and students from Azerbaijan, Bashkortostan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, in Dagestan, Karachay-Cherkessia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Mongolia, Moldova, Nakhchivan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Tatarstan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. Tuition is about 1.5 to 2 times higher in state institutions where teaching is in English.

Annual tuition at the Universities Foundation is usually $ 6,000 (US) to $ 20,000 (US), but foundation universities also offer many students with scholarships that cover 30 to 40 percent of their tuition.

Graduate degrees take two years to complete, but this varies by program and institution.

To help defray the costs, foreign students can find a job in a university as a researcher, but foreign students are not allowed to work in other organizations in the public or private sector.


Academic year

The academic year in Turkey is based on two semesters and runs from October until June.


Opportunities for higher education

After graduation, foreign students can find employment opportunities as researchers or staff in universities, especially universities offering programs taught in English. Visa requirements
